I have heard of runners, even elite professional runners, backing off so that someone else could finish ahead of them for a podium or top ten finish.
I have personally let people “beat” me in a sprint to the finish.
Consider how important it is for YOU to finish a few seconds slower. If you are going for a PR or a medal it may be important. How about the other person? Will it help their confidence or boost their self-esteem?
Sometime you may come across runners who were struggling in a race. Try to give them some words of encouragement or even run along with them for a while even if it means that you will have a slower finish time. If you notice something that you can do to help them then do it – maybe they need some fuel or electrolytes; maybe you’ve noticed a strategy or technique that might help them.
Running isn’t all about winning. I've found runners to be very friendly and encouraging. We help each other out if we can. This is especially true of trail runners.
